TOP 5 PUNK BANDS FROM NORTHAMPTON

1. THE SQUIDS

These Northamptonshire legends breathed new, beer smelling life into the Northampton music scene. They played loads of awesome/naked shows then split up. They got banned from playing a show in America for having a burning American flag on their flyer.

2. DROOL

This three piece is totally the hottest new boy band ever, forget JLS. They bash out the forgetful, under rehearsed punk jams that everyone DIGZ! They can't play their instruments.

3. PETS

They played one show which changed the world of punk forever. Then they split up. Take that!

4. WOTWOLFF

One of the craziest bands alive, full of ANGST.

5. BLOOD VISIONS

They bring complicated song structures to the world of punk. But don't worry, the singer still shouts...A LOT.

TOP 5 DOODLES OF ALL TIME

The best thing you can keep in your pocket is a notebook. A tiny, thin one preferably. Use it on the train, bus, in the library, church, the park, the bathtub. Use it for notes, lists, poems, puns, as a rag to mop up spilled wine, or as house for your doodles. And as soon as you finish it, get another and make more nice things and good stuff! Here is a list of cool things you can draw:

1. Dinosaurs with bones in their bellies. Dinosaurs are, um, like, the best creatures to draw because nobody really knows what they looked like i.e. you can make them look like anything you like and it's totally legit.

2. Nudes. Nudity. Naked people. NAKED BUMS! Treat this like an exercise in anatomy or a way of cutting down on your porn downloads.

3. So, you've drawn a dinosaur and some naked people, put the two together and you get a MERMAID!

4. Bicycles are surprisingly difficult to draw! Yeah, I know, you being Dutch and all probably means you can draw a perfect life-size bike in about three seconds at the age of four, but the rest of us (i.e. I) remain challenged by the depiction of this particular vehicle.

5. If in doubt, draw a moustache on it.

HAVE FUN WITH YOUR NOTEBOOKS!

TOP 5 FAVOURITE MATERIAL THINGS OF 2010
(or things that bought me the most happiness per Euro)
By Regina van der Kloet

5. Records and 7"s from the local kringloop winkel. Because they don't make them like they used to.

4. The world's best backpack from the local kringloop winkel. Because it holds those records so well.

3. An old olympus camera from Marktplaats. Because nostalgia is the new optimism.

2. A return midnight train ticket to Zurich. Because far-away friends are the best when they're close.

1. Bike parts to convert an old donated road bike into a polo bike. Because it turns out there is actually a team sport out there that I like.

TOP 5 THINGS YOU CAN MAKE OUT OF A POTATO
(or confessions of a potato addict)
By Zofia Ciechowska

1. Placki ziemniaczane!
A Polish dish which translates into potato pancakes (the English name is crunchless, so don't bother with it). I would eat fucktons of these as a child and I still do whenever my Polish gran makes them for me. They are dead easy to make: Peel and grate 6 large, starchy potatoes. Peel and grate a small onion. Mix both in a large bowl. Crack in 2 eggs, add 3-4 tbsp. of flour, then salt and pepper to taste. Stir well. Heat some sunflower oil in a pan, spoon thin layers of potato pancake mix into the pan, fry on both sides until crispy and golden. Drain on some paper towel and eat piping hot with a sprinkling of sea salt, or a dollop of sour cream/natural yoghurt, or with a bit of sugar like my granddad does. Now you’re basically Polish!

2. Spanish tortilla or omelette or whatever it’s called!

Fucking hell, I love this stuff so much I could probably eat it for the rest of my life and still ask for it on my deathbed. Apparently, the Spanish Civil War erupted because the Spanish could not agree whether it should be made with or without onion. I opt for onion because I am also addicted to them. The best thing about this thing is that it can be eaten hot or cold. Although I still haven’t figured out how to actually not eat this thing before it goes cold. A good recipe can be found here.

3. Patatje Oorlog!

My pre-pataje oorlog days seem like a blur. (Non-Dutch speakers, the name means chip war!) For those who don't know this rare delicacy (shame on you) this should be Holland's top export product (aside from the stroopwafel). Smothered in saté sauce and mayonnaise and a sprinkling of onion, patatje oorlog is eaten out of a flimsy plastic tray/greasy paper sleeve with one of those mini T-Rex clawed forks. Please refer to patat’s Dutch Wikipedia page for a full list of crazy Dutch chips and sauce combinations. I also like chips with salt and vinegar, so they can tie with patatje oorlog.

4. Potato stamps!

Remember these? Slice a large potato in half and carve out a shape in its flesh. Dip in poster paint and apply to paper/walls/clothes/annoyed friends and pets.

5. A Spud gun!

So I haven’t done this, but it looks so ridiculous, I had to post it here. WARNING: this could be quite dangerous…I think? Maybe make a mini one first before you move on to a potato bazooka.

Top 5 Things That Were According To Some Perhaps Not Very Sensible, But I'm Glad They Happened Anyway
(or how the most stupid things can actually be the most rewarding and how this does obviously not include the new law against squatting)

5. Watching a friend open a show, dancing to DJ Dog Dick (which turned out to be number one in the 'Top Shows of 2010' list I am not going to write, and yes, that means it was better than the No Age show at Trouw.), Drinking way too many beers and generally having way too much fun for having a way too busy day at work the next day.

4. Teaming up with Isolde Woudstra to do this weekly contribution for some blog, started out looking fun but quite pointless. Now almost a year later we're still doing it and yes, it's still fun, but it also turned out to be quite inspiring and we even had an exhibition and spent one crazy weekend together to write an article for the Subbacultcha magazine (which maybe deserves a separate entry in this list, but I don't have any more room.)

3. Feeling like a teenager in line for the Ariel Pink show, deciding to go with this flow, starting with buying a really, really bad joint at the coffeeshop next to De Nieuwe Anita. Leading to one of the most crazy and perhaps most fun nights of the year. (sometimes it's good to be a teenager again. sometimes.)

2. Deciding time is more than money. Getting a contract for less hours.

1. Biking home at 7 on a Sunday morning, falling off my bike, breaking my digital camera, having it take two months to get repaired.... it finally made me look into buying that old analogue camera I wanted to buy forever.

TOP 5 DONALD BARTHELME STORIES OF ALL TIME

1. King of Jazz
Opening line: "Well I'm the king of jazz now, thought Hokie Mokie to himself as he oiled the slide on his trombone."

2. Robert Kennedy Saved from Drowning
Opening paragraph: "He is neither abrupt with nor excessively kind to
associates. Or he is both abrupt and kind. The telephone is, for him,
a whip, a lash, but also a conduit for soothing words, a sink into
which he can hurl gallons of syrup if it comes to that. He reads
quickly, scratching brief comments ("Yes," "No") in corners of the
paper. He slouches in the leather chair, looking about him with a
slightly irritated air for new visitors, new difficulties. He spends
his time sending and receiving messengers. "I spend my time sending
and receiving messengers," he says. "Some of these messages are
important. Others are not."

3. The School
Closing paragraph (SPOILERS!): "I said that they shouldn’t be
frightened (although I am often frightened) and that there was value
everywhere. Helen came and embraced me. I kissed her a few times on
the brow. We held each other. The children were excited. Then there
was a knock on the door, I opened the door, and the new gerbil walked
in. The children cheered wildly.
(BTW, George Saunders wrote a great essay on this story in The
Brain-Dead Megaphone.)

4. Me and Miss Mandible
14 November: "The distinction between children and adults, while
probably useful for some purposes, is at bottom a specious one, I
feel. There are only individual egos, crazy for love."

5. The Balloon
Key line (maybe): "The balloon, I said, is a spontaneous
autobiographical disclosure, having to do with the unease I felt at
your absence, and with sexual deprivation, but now that your visit to
Bergen has been terminated, it is no longer necessary or appropriate."
The Balloon is available in Sixty Stories (Penguin Classics).
