How appropriate for the first entry. This game really builds up for a pay-off. No, I won't spoil it, although you can expect intense boss battles.

2. Limbo
Close the curtains, turn off the lights, put on that three-cd 174min soundtrack from David Finchers The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and find out how deep this beautiful and bleak rabbit hole goes.

3. Great Gatsby for NES
Made me read the book. Great stuff.

4. Elephant Quest
You play a blue elephant and 'that bastard Wooly' stole your hat. You're determined to get it back. Oh, you have a laser strapped on your back and you carry an endless key chain with you.

5. Portal 2
This is the only blockbuster game you'll need this year. There's a good robot and a bad robot, you have your portal gun and get to solve some puzzles. Sounds meh, but it's not. It's brilliant.

6. Passage
The crappiest looking game in the list is emotionally the most devastating. And the best part is, it takes only five minutes.

7. Inside a Star-filled Sky
Made by the same game designer as Passage. Pixel Inception. Go inside a powerup, inside an enemy, inside yourself, inside.

8. Tiny Wings
The Game That Made Me Forget About Time The Most. I hate it.

9. The Graveyard
One of the first games by Belgium developer Tale of Tales. If you buy the full version the old lady might actually die.

10. Tokyo Jungle
I haven't wasted time with this game yet, but I'm really stoked to play it. Didn't we all run plastic farm animals violently into each other when we were young? I mean come on: Lion vs. Crocodile.

11. BallDroppings
Create your own Four Tet-ish sounds. Or don't. Just let them drop like tears.

1. Katy B – On A Mission

On A Mission isnot only excellent because of big issues like ‘women reasserting themselves inmale-dominated dance genres' but mainly because it makes you feellike kissing boys, grinding sweatily on the dancefloor till 5 AM at some randomhouse party, laughing your head off and not giving an eff. Katy has the most intense of voicesthat effortlessly swings through a jungle of dubby stuttering basslines, raveyjolts and heartbroken lyrics veering towards euphoria. This album isdeliciously danceable and I absolutely love it more than anything else in theworld.

2. Death Grips – Exmilitary

Exmilitary is acollection of thirteen maniac tracks that beat you unconscious with their clenchedfists of raging noise and rabid, barking vocals, Charles Manson clips included.To be quite honest, Death Grips just plain scare the shit out of me, but inthat kind of way that makes me want to put my ear up to the speaker blastingthis album and irreparably damage my hearing. Zach Hill, Flatlander and MC Ridehave released a beast of a record into the wild which has gone on some sickkilling spree, wiping out all musical competition this year.

3. WU LYF – Go Tell FireTo The Mountain

I will grudgingly concede that these guys are kind of livingup to the hype they made a while back. Werewolf howls, percussion gunshots andtrumpeting organs make this record tear off its sleeve with much roaring, manlyforce. Frontman Ellery Roberts delivers the final punch with his frantic, raspyvocals that string together the lone guitar twangs that litter this album. Thepheromones can be smelled from a mile away. Question is - do we buy that wholestory about them recording it in some abandoned church?

4. Flamingods – Sun

Sun is pretty muchlike that big ball of fire shining through your window as you read this column– it seems like no big deal but actually it is an exploding radioactive starthat could swallow up our whole solar system. It’s about five London boysdrinking too much tropical juice drink, getting a sugar rush and banging on weirdtribal instruments and making a lot of unclassifiable, happy racket. Andfinally, it has a lovely homemade sound to it that makes you feel like you’rewatching these dudes rehearse in your living room.

5. Julianna Barwick – The Magic Place

I want to take the time to officially un-baptise Julianna Barwick as ‘the new Enya’ and all the badassociations that may have entailed. TheMagic Place is ambient music stripped down to its most naked, unashamed andnatural state as Barwick’s voice builds a winding labyrinth of unearthly sighswith the help of a loop station and nothing more (!). An album that isgenuinely soothing and startlingly beautiful in a way that doesn’t just annoyyou.

6. Pictureplane – Thee Physical

I like to think of Travis Egedy aka Pictureplane as LadyGaga’s cool little tall brother. Perhaps he doesn’t wear dresses made ofcharcuterie, but he most certainly wears a post-physical dress with much pridein Thee Physical when he chants ‘youcould be my boy and I could be your girl, trancegenderless’ with the guestappearance of Nika Roza Danilova of Zola Jesus. It’s cool, subversive clubbymusic strewn with 90s synth basslines, diva samples, lasers and piano breaks,all with a dash of DIY queer/simulation/internet theory to top it off.

7. V/A - Music for Saharan Cellphones

Chris Kirkley of Sahel Sounds travelled around Mali andMauretania to discover that the main mode of listening and sharing music therewas through mobile phones and bluetooth. He recorded a collection of theselocal tunes and released it in the USA, it gained a lot of hype andsubsequently got remixed by a number of unknown dudes. Music for SaharanCellphones is mindblowingly awesome firstly because it is the most tricked outcollection of distorted African beats to date but also because it has crossedso many different borders on so many different levels that it makes my headhurt when I think about it. And it’s free!

8. Clams Casino – Rainforest

You will know Mike Volpe aka Clams Casino from hiscollaborations with the likes of Lil B and Soulja Boy, but those tracks turnpale when confronted with this man’s deconstructed hip hop EP Rainforest. Amidst the tropical faunaand flora hum and buzz comes forth a powerful blast of throbbing echo andmuffled vocals that sends shivers down your spine and hypnotizes you intomiasmic oblivion. Can you believe this guy doesn’t make this stuff for a livingand interns at a hospital instead? Not for long, I say.

9. Barn Owl – Shadowland

Recommended by my bearded drone fan flatmate, I never reallythought I’d get into this EP and yet I did which is why you should definitelygive it a go too. I don’t have a beard which might make me less credible thanmy flatmate, so maybe just take his word for it. Made up of just threeinsomniac tracks that meander down dusty ambient roads, Shadowland’s mantric guitar waves and synthesizers create an achingtension that seems to repeatedly build and release itself. Best listened towhen not sober.

10. Spaceghostpurrp - Blvcklvnd Rvdix 66.6 (1991)

Miami-based 20 year old Spaceghostpurrp is a cheeky littlebastard who likes rapping about sexual intercourse and conjuring up spooky,horrorcore-inspired beats interspersed with Mortal Kombat samples. This guygets a massive high five for his good sense of humour (see album title) andgeneral tomfoolery. To be quite honest, I mainly like this album because SGPcompares his penis to a flying broomstick from Harry Potter. No but really,it’s damn good and if you haven’t listened to this then you’re waaaay behind.Get on it.

11. Pink Dollaz – Mixtape Volume I

Californian five-piece girl rap group Pink Dollaz releasedthis mixtape in 2010, but I am putting it in here because a) I just can and b)it deserves another shot at being the hottest shit in the world. An unabashedghetto teen girl manifesto, MixtapeVolume I is the audio counterpart to slashing your ex-boyfriend’s tyres andpissing on his air conditioner. Exploding with window-shattering basslines andrap lines that cover cunnilingus and hand me down Gucci, this record is thebest Xmas present you could give your little sister.

So yeah, F11 takes the 11th spot. How original. But! Firefox users can go to full screen mode by hitting F11 and compared to the other F-keys that’s miraculously awesome. He’s like that kid you were worried about who in the end turned out alright.

Sometimes you’re just done mouse-/mousepad-scrolling to get to the bottom of that browser page. Hit that down arrow, brother.

A semi-colon AND a regular colon, combined in one key? It’s all you need to show off you (might) have had tertiary education; trust me.

Numpad Enter doesn’t sweat it. He’s just chilling in his corner, letting the other Enter-key take centre stage, but he’s your guy after stringing those Numpad digits together.

So the Escape key is not quite in his prime anymore, with Alt-F4 stealing a lot of its thunder, but still does the trick with IM screens and such. If only all keyboard keys were so modest.

4. Prt Sc / SysRq

Windows users are, as you all know, by definition not creative, so we use the Print Screen-key and MS Paint for all graphic purposes. Also, Windows users care about system specifications a lot, so that SysRq function comes in really handy as well.

3. Backspace

Being able to remove the rubbish you scribble down without a trace is probably the single greatest innovation to writing since the pen. No, scrap that.

2. CAPS LOCK

EVERYTHING IS FUNNIER/BETTER/AWESOMETASTICERRR WITH CAPS LOCK ON

1. Pause / Break

Have you ever used this key? No, of course not. It doesn’t do anything when you press it. But that’s the beauty of it. Whenever your eyes come across the Pause Break-key, it invariably means you’re having a lapse of concentration. Why else would you be looking down to the most obscure confines of your keyboard? Simply by feasting your eyes on it, you realize that indeed you do need either a pause or a break. And thus the key works like a charm without actually having to press it.Call that post-keyboardism if you will. Suck on that, Steve Jobs.

For someone who says he's no social butterfly, Andy of Denver Rocky Mountain avant-pop duo Gauntlet Hair is pretty outspoken. The BFF's (him and Craig on drums) have an amazing new (self-titled) album out on Dead Oceans, which we can't seem to 'unplay'. So, what is gauntlet hair?
It was actually a clerk at a vintage shop who dropped that bomb. I was about to buy this Johnny Winters album for a buck and the guy behind the counter said it looked like he had gauntlet hair. It's really weird hair, like a helmet.

Will it get more into fashion than a Ponytail or Braids?
Hopefully not, haha.

What kind of hairdo do you prefer on girls?
Short hair.

That's refreshing. So no long American Apparel hair hanging loosely around bare shoulders accompanied by a seductive stare?
Gauntlet Hair likes it's girls to be boys. But wait, that would work as well, I suppose.

What's great about Denver?

Well, it's also known as 'The Mile-High City'. I guess The Byrds named their famous song 'Eight Miles High' after it, but they were seven miles off, due to, well, you know...drugs. And Tim Allen is from Denver! But that doesn't have to mean anything.
Haha, but that DOES mean something, Brenda! I grew up on that show.

Do you use his famous Signature Tools? Did you use them for the song 'Mop it Up'?
Haha, what? Are they on the market?

He has his own line of tools. And a midlife crisis.
Hun, his tools don't work. Seriously, I thought that that was the humor of it...that he knows nothing about tools.

Yep, now he has lots of tools he can't seem to sell.
I'm not buying them anyway. Actually Tim is a perfect example of what Denver does to people. They come out here to unwind and go into the chill mode. And look what it did to Tim's career! All ruined. He got caught up in the chill.

Yeah, and fucked up a gazebo or thousand along the way.
Hahaha, I love this so far. I have no idea of what's going on. Hit me again.

I've read you two don't work well with other parties, but for live shows you have an extra guitarist. Do I sense some intimacy issues there?
Craig and I have become very intimate yes. It's been ten years now. We've developed that sort of telepathic ability. Trying to involve another person in the writing just seems to slow us down. I suppose we're very protective of our work, you know? It has taken us so long to get to this point and we really just don't want to share it with anyone else.

Does he automatically answer your (singing-)cries with a smashing (drum-)whip? That kind of telepathic vibe?
Well, on the topic of intimacy: Craig's rough in a real sexy I-want-to-make-music-with-you-kind of way.

You have studied sound engineering, but didn't mix your own album. That must feel like leaving your baby, or your own leg, on someone else's doorstep. To be eaten by their dog. But maybe afterwards you respect the concept of walking a bit more?
Ha, I did the first mix of it. Then passed it on to Brian Marcus. I tend to mix for myself, not others, so what sounds good to me may sound like hell to the audience and our mothers. But I put my baby in good hands. I've learned my favourite tool is EQ.

Okay, haha. What about reverb?
Thought you might go to that. I do love me some reverb. To resemble being near the Rocky Mountains, or is that echo? Honestly, nothing that we write has to do with the mountains. It's more personal. Intimate even.

The song actually is called 'My Christ' now. It's about masochism in a way, but more so in the emotional sense. I'm trying to leave out any lyrics here.

O man, intimacy for me comes on so many levels.

I'll try. Not to cheese this out, but I think that writing music has become the most intimate of all. I'm not what you would call a social butterfly, I'm sort of shy and reserved. So writing has become my main form of expression. This has everything to do with why I don't share my lyrics and such. The use of reverb is similar to that voice they put on those silhouetted people on TV who don't want their identities to be reveiled. It's sort of the same kind of shit. I can say whatever the fuck I want, and no one will ever understand anything about it."

I see, you drown the lyrics in reverb, so no one gets to hear about the Christ.
Basically.

But what if you're quite the poet? Your mom will never know.

At first, it may seem that the main appeal or selling point if you will, of King Krule is that he is young. This is pretty darn cool, noted. But if you look with your ears instead of your eyes, the sound of King Krule is one that is wise beyond its years and definitely worth a listen. The listen is what all musicians crave, they seek out the attention. King Krule doesn’t, his music simply exists and people are flocking to it. They are drawn to it and have been drawn to it ever since Zoo Kid, King Krule’s humble beginnings. I’ll leave it up to you to decide which name you prefer. Of course, I could give you the real name of the dude behind King Krule, but that would ruin the mystique a little. And you can probably just Google it anyway. It’s the melancholic nature of his voice, the sparseness of the instrumentals and the endearing quality of the young chap’s character that are capturing people’s imaginations. He sounds pretty down in the dumps, but he doesn’t make you feel sorry for him. I don’t quite know how he does it, but he makes you listen.

QUESTION AND ANSWER SESSION:

Are they romantic mix tape material? NO. Sorry King Krule, but your songs are serious downers.

Are they party playlist material? NO. Again, the death of the party when dropped in a DJ set.

Should you go and tell your friends? YES. You could, but they are probably already empathising with him as we speak.

Peace use guitars to their advantage and throw together upbeat rhythms with distorted atmospheric whooshes. They manage to sound big, whilst retaining the finer details of their sound. The vocals add a hazy blur to the music; cryptic sentences sang with equal measures of conviction and laid back attitude. Also judging from the healthy doses of ‘ooh’ on their single “BBLOOD”, they aren’t afraid to have some fun with pop music-ish structures in amongst all the guitar driven mystery. Don’t worry, this love for Peace isn’t all based on one track, their live show has been witnessed by this humble writer. Let it be known that they have much more up their rolled up shirt sleeves. If you haven’t had the chance to see them live yet, it is advised. They have managed, in all their youthful wisdom, to combine the mass appealing sound of the guitar with that all important edge. Their visual aesthetic is rather disorientating but don’t let that put you off their music, give Peace a chance.

WE LIKE ANGUISH SANDWICH

Individually minded rock has been doing the rounds since forever, but then so has punk and dance and rap and every other musical genre. Music has essentially become a process of recycling old ideas and coming at them from a slightly different angle. Anguish Sandwich, the brain child of the ever prolific Chris East, are putting their own angry filling into the sandwich of indie rock. And boy does it taste good. The reverberation is turned up to eleven, the drums are bashed with Meg White style simplicity and enthusiasm and the bass is played by their floor dwelling bassist who chooses to sit down at gigs. This quirk is slowly becoming legendary among Anguish fans and it just has to be mentioned. Music fans are lapping up their catchy, punchy and crunchy anthems. They are a welcome reminder of the fact that guitars + drums + bass + hollering = one of the best ideas around. The attitude running through Anguish Sandwich’s sound is a firm ‘why not?’ and you’d have to be a cold hearted ice queen/king not to agree. They keep it real.

QUESTION AND ANSWER SESSION:

Are they romantic mix tape material?
NO. These guys should be filed under ‘fun’ rather than ‘romance’. But hey, do what you want to do.

Are they party playlist material?
YES. They make jumping in the air in time to the drums more fun than you ever would have thought.

YES. They probably know already, but if they don’t, you’ll be the coolest cat licker around.

PARADISE STATE OF MIND

Claire Evans from YACHT is the ultimate beach babe who loves pina coladas and getting caught in the rain. Moreover, she definitely has more than half a brain. Admittedly, we didn’t exactly make love at midnight on the dunes of the cape, but we had a nice chat instead about holidays, utopia and their new album Shangri La.

Hi Claire, how are you?

I'm well, thank you.

Since this issue of Subbacultcha magazine is the Beach Issue, first things first, do you like pina coladas and getting caught in the rain?

Yes, and we're into yoga, too.

Can you remember any particularly good or bad summer holidays?

Every moment of existence should be treated with the same reverence we treat summer holidays. Remaking our understanding of "holiday" means rejecting the image of ourselves we inherit from dominator culture — that of a worker, someone whose leisure must be compartmentalized into units, and somehow deserving of exclusion from paradise. Paradise -- summer holiday -- is a state of mind that can be claimed by any one of us.

How do you feel slightly over a week before your album release? Do you have plans for the big day?

It verges on the anticlimactic. We finished Shangri-La almost six months ago, and we have been living with its ideas for much longer. We feel as though it already exists and has presence, but in reality its life has only begun. Once it's released out into the world, it will no longer be ours -- it will belong to everybody, and we anticipate that moment with trepidation and anticipation.

In what way is Shangri La different to what you have created until now?

We think of our albums as manifestations of our philosophies, aesthetic interests, and ideas. See Mystery Lights was the purest document of the time during which we made it; it reflects our obsessions, at the time, with ritual and mystery. After traveling around the world and discussing our ideas with people for several years, the philosophy, the ideas began to feel out of date. Our music needs to exist in the Now. Shangri-La, then is the document of now. It is a very specific representation of our current dreams, fears, and desires.

Can you explain to our readers what Utopia and Dystopia mean to YACHT?

The idea of Utopia is a great equalizer: all cultures throughout history have had their own Utopia. Some call it Shangri-La, others call it Eden, Valhalla, Arcadia, Paradise. It's the representation of our desire for perfection, our innate dream for order and peace. In a sense, it's ideology made physical -- Utopia is what happens when some entity attempts to turn ideas into a place. Unfortunately, it's not something that can be done, because ideology is singular and people are multifarious. Hence, Dystopia is the inevitable result of any concerted effort to impose ideas on place. These extremes are natural to the human race, and one cannot exist without the other. Our idea for Utopia, our contribution to this historical dialogue, is that the place can never be built -- but it can exist in our minds.

Which is closer to your heart, surfing waves or surfing the web? How has the great WWW influenced the way you work as YACHT? How has it influenced your belief system?

YACHT would be impossible without the internet. Access to an infinite image bank, access to both established and paranoid conceptions of the world, and direct access to people -- these are all things which define our work. The inherent anarchism, populism, and underlying complex order of the Internet is a source of great awe. It is as impressive (and spiritual) to us as the universe itself.

Do you have any exciting performances up your sleeve for your European tour this summer?

No two YACHT performances are the same. We can only tell you that there will be both analog and digital sound production, five human bodies, visual stimulus, and physical contact.

Apart from touring, creating and interacting, do you actually get a break this summer?

We consider ourselves to be deeply privileged to be able to travel around the world, perform, disseminate ideas, and have discussions with people of all nationalities and backgrounds. There is no time for a holiday when you don't know when that door of opportunity will close -- we want to take advantage of it while we can.

If there were only three things you could take to an eternal desert island beach holiday what would they be?

Eternal? A long and difficult book, like Manly P. Hall's "The Secret Teachings of All Ages," comfortable clothes made of natural materials, and perhaps a cyanide capsule, should living forever become too much of a burden on our spirits.

Do you have any good sunburn remedies for our readers? Any sandcastle building tips or swimwear recommendations?

Although you should avoid long-term sun exposure without SPF protection, never forget that the sun feeds us happiness directly into the tops of our heads by spilling Vitamin D onto the world.

DIRTY BEACHES INTERVIEW

Listening to Badlands (Zoo Music, 2011) will teleport you to the front seat of a brand-new Chevy cruising a lost highway. There's no lovely Betty Draper right beside you though, nor an ice cream parlour anywhere near in sight. Badlands evokes a much more darker image, one drenched in angst and noir. Taiwan-born via Honululu-Toronto-Montreal and now Vancouver based drifter Alex Zhang Hungtai aka Dirty Beaches sprinkled his new album with “minimalist rockabilly”. We asked him about it in this little questionaire. He answered every question with 'c'. For cherry of course.

1. Your most recent release 'Badlands' was made as an homage to your father's youth. Listening to the record I came up with certain impressions of your dad. Which one is the most accurate?

a He was not the most upbeat person, even though he owned a superfast motorcycle.

b He met your mother in the lobby of a hotel when she was 17 wearing nothing but black nylon.

c Other, namely: My dad was a trouble maker in his youth. Even though he mellowed out in his later years, he's someone you don't fuck with. I'm a pretty big guy (6' 2" 170lbs) and remember feeling scared once when he stared at me after I called him an old man.That stare is in the album.

2. How did you come up with Dirty Beaches as a moniker?

a I woke up one day on a deserted beach with seaweed wrapped around my legs.

b I watched a lot of Baywatch as a kid and developed a thing for little red bathing suits.

c Other, namely: I awoke on a beach with Baywatch babes running around, but their voices were dubbed in French -“dirty bitches” was pronounced “dirty beaches” in their accountable accent.

3. Your approach to making music is very similar to the working process of a filmmaker; you've said to start out with an idea or character. While experimenting with sounds this results in a certain persona and atmosphere. What's your favorite movie character and why?

a Audrey from Twin Peaks for the cherry part.

b The silent girl in Wong Kar Wai's film '2046'.

c Other, namely: I love Willem Dafoe in almost every film I've ever seen him in. This is a hard one. Bobby Peru in 'Wild at Heart', and Dafoe as a cross dressing gay FBI homicide detective in 'Boondocks Saints' (I didn't like the movie but Dafoe was amazing).

4. Should David Lynch keep making music or stick solely to directing?

a. Yes.

b. No.

c. Other, namely: David Lynch can do whatever the fuck he wants.

5. What do you think of the comparison with Chris Isaak?

a It's more accurate than being compared to Brian Setzer.

b Except for the Helena Christensen video and his Twin Peaks appearance I think he should get back to his blue motel (sic) and never come out again – I absolutely hate the comparison.

c Other, namely: Hahahahah, answer B is very accurate but it's mean, so let's take out the-staying-in- the-blue-motel-and-never-come-out part. Chris Isaak can do whatever the fuck he wants.

6. 'Badlands' is also the sensational debut by filmmaker Terence Malick who recently won the Palme d'Or for the Tree of Life.

a That's no accident, the way the film depicts two outcast lovers on the run is spot on.

b Lars von Trier should have won.

c Other, namely: It's none of my business who wins what. I don't like criticizing other artists. I work on my own shit and mind my own business.

7. What's your take on lo-fi sound as an aesthetic?

a It has great enunciative powers.

b If the label would hand me more money I'd definitely leave home budget recording behind and go highest-fi.

c Other, namely: I think it'll be a gradual upgrade as in that each record improves fidelity-wise with the improved budget.

8. What's the best about being nostalgic?

a Not thinking about the future.

b It ain't what it used to be.

c Other, namely: I don't know. I hear people use to drill holes in peoples skulls in Europe when they have nostalgia, 'cuz they didn't know how to treat it. It was in between clinical depression and other mental illnesses that occurred at the time.

9. You've lived in various cities. If you were to move again what's the one thing you would not leave behind?

a My comb.

b Box full of VHS tapes I stole as a videostore employee.

c Other, namely: I leave behind almost everything.

10. I read you were offended once by a journalist who was rude with you. Are you offended by this questionaire?

a Yes, it makes me feel like being in high school again.

b No, I'd rather answer these questions than spending quality time playing beach volleyball with my friends.

c Other, namely: I'd rather be spending quality time playing beach volleyball with handsome black men.

In the eighties we not only wanted to hear the bass, but to feel it as well. So we bought a boombox (a portable stereo set the size of a suitcase, also known as ghetto blaster) and proudly walked the streets playing it LOUD. Why the kids of today are listening to bass oriented dance music on their mobile phones WITHOUT any bass is beyond me and a discussions I don’t want to get into right now. As you can see in the first still the boombox is an important prop in a classic American movie. The second still, from an earlier movie, shows a European director using a boombox to listen to piano music.

WE LIKE BLOOD VISIONS

Blood Visions are one of those bands who aren’t afraid to crank it up a notch. Not only do they flick the switch to full throttle in the volume department, they make sure that each guitar strum, bass line, drum thwack and hormonal holler is exhilarating. Their frontman alone could work a room full of pumped up punk rock punters. He is a ball of a dozen rock star’s spat out chewing gum on stage, and it’s often hard to tell whether he’s nervous, angry or on a 30 minute sugar rush. The band can barely contain themselves and you’ll barely be able to contain their sound in your ears. They manage to pull of being incredibly abrasive whilst being incredibly anthemic. That’s no easy feat, especially when they are all still at sixth form (apart from occasional band member Matt King). They make music look like a young man’s game with their seemingly effortless ability to whip up punishing riffs and holler along choruses. Hailing from Northampton, England, this band of teens is set to run around the world, causing fellow like-minded youths to jump around, jump around, jump up, jump up and get down.

QUESTION AND ANSWER SESSION:

Are they romantic mix tape material?
NO. They are not romantic.

Are they party playlist material?
YES. They will cause a circle pit no matter what dull-ass party they are played at.

Should you go and tell your friends?
YES. So you can get together and punch each other at one of their shows.

This year EYE celebrates the career of Jack Nicholson, with screenings of 30 of the 70 films in which Nicholson has acted, a talk show, a film quiz and an evening dedicated to Nicholson’s work for American director and producer Roger Corman. For most of the time the part of Sean Penn in The Tree of Life consists of him walking aimlessly among skyscrapers and scorched earth. In the award winning new epic by director Terrence Malick Penn is the grown-up Jack, remembering his youth in Waco, Texas and still grieving over the death of his younger brother. Looking for the meaning of life he asks questions to God (an imaginary friend for adults) and goes back to the origins of the universe. At the end of the movie Earth is devoured by the sun, which is not a spoiler but just a sad fact of life. The Tree of Life is not the first film in which Sean Penn lives in a world on the brink of collapse.

According to his colleagues, friends, acquaintances, his beloved cricket team and the local postman, he was kind and polite, studious, delightful, funny, a lovely man, a wonderful man, one of the nicest human beings on the planet, the most unassuming man you could wish to meet, the kind of bloke you can’t help to get along with, elegant, a nice gentle Englishman and the perfect gentleman. Even in women’s clothes (as shown in the picture above). After reading his recent, detailed, authorized biography he is now officially my favourite horror actor.
